What are the Examples of Biophilic Design Architecture?

Biophilic design elements include a huge range of designer or architect concepts that they incorporate in to their building projects. Some of the biophilic designs incorporated by Biophilic Design Service America in their projects would include some common features such as

  • Planting trees, and plants in to the walls, landscaping and interiors to create an environment of nature
  • Usage of natural light by gaining maximum through glass windows, panels and skylights.  This is also achieved using balconies, ventilators and sliding doors.
  • Introducing water features like fountains in reception areas, fish tanks or bowls, and flower vases containing water
  • Encouraging the inhabitation of birds and insects in some cases
  • Using images of natural scenery, wildlife, and colors related to natural world
  • Incorporating wallpapers and floor designs with random floor and wall pattern that are found from natural elements
  • Extensively using timber, wood furniture, wool or clay in structures and furniture

Which environment would you choose?

Here are two scenarios you should consider before deciding whether you want Biophilic house design or conventional office room designs:

First option

You go to an office which is made up with steel, glass and concrete materials every day. The interiors are made with marble floors, straight lines and grey furniture and enter the lift to reach an office which is full of chairs and tables divided by steel and glass made partitions. If you look out the window you will find rows after rows of concrete buildings with the same makeup. Does it look inspiring?

Second option

When you enter your office building you hear voice of water gushing out of fountain. You also notice brightly blooming flowers which is attracting butterflies and other flying insects. The entrance is made of wavy timber façade and plenty of natural light.

You feel as you have entered a green house minus humidity when you enter your office. You see green wall, green plants planted between sections and an ergonomically arranged seating pattern. On one of the windows you see a bird feeder and see a bird taking off after drinking water.
